Short session
30 minA scalp check, a cleanse, a brief massage and a rinse. A good first visit, or an hour you can fit into a lunch break.
Scalp care in Oak Park
Root is the scalp-care room at the back of our family salon on Madison Street. Each visit is a cleanse, a massage and a rinse, for every texture of hair. New clients are welcome.

A visit
That is all it is. We look at your scalp with you first, then take it in three plain steps, and you leave with a rinsed, towel-dried head and nowhere to be for a minute.
Warm water and a gentle cleanser, worked through to the roots with the pads of the fingers. Tell us if the water is too warm.
Slow, steady pressure across the scalp, temples, neck and shoulders. We ask how firm you like it, and we stop whenever you ask.
A long, warm rinse, a conditioner if you like, and a towel dry. Add a blow-dry if you have somewhere to be afterward.

Every texture
Coily, curly, wavy or straight, loose, braided, twisted or locked. The three steps stay the same. How we do them changes with your hair.
We work with wet, slippery hair, in sections, so coils stay together and nothing gets pulled. The cleanse is slower and the rinse is longer.
Fingertips only, no brush, so curls keep their pattern. Plenty of water to rinse, and we leave the hair damp or diffuse it if you ask.
A lighter hand with the cleanser and a quick, thorough rinse, so fine hair doesn't end up flat. Towel dry, or a blow-dry if you like.
Braids, twists and locs are welcome too. Tell us when you book and we will plan the session around your style.
Who you'll meet
Vicky and Oneika look after the scalp-care room. The salon's stylists are up front if you want a cut or a style the same day.

Owner and cosmetologist
Vicky opened the salon and added the scalp-care room when clients kept asking for a longer, slower wash. She works the room on Saturdays and is the one to ask about booking a whole family.

Scalp-care specialist and cosmetologist
Oneika works with coily and tightly curled hair every day and knows how to keep a style in place around a session. She takes the Wednesday to Friday bookings.
In their words
“My hair is tight coils and every wash is a fight. Here nobody rushed, nothing got pulled, and I forgot what I was stressed about.”
“I booked the short session on a lunch hour and my husband booked one the next week. Same room, same quiet.”
“The look at my scalp at the start was the part I didn't expect. She told me what she saw in plain words and didn't try to sell me anything.”

Book
Pick a session and a time on the calendar. Prefer to talk it through? Call the salon and ask for Root.
Thirty, sixty or ninety minutes. Most people start with sixty. The time includes a short look at your scalp and a talk before we begin.
No. Come as you are. The cleanse is part of the session.
Every texture is. We work with coily, curly, wavy and straight hair, and around braids, twists and locs. Tell us when you book and we will plan around your style.
Yes. Book two sessions back to back and the second guest waits in the salon. Scalp care is for guests 12 and older; a parent books for anyone under 18 and stays in the building.
Whatever you like. You stay dressed, and we give you a cape and a towel. A loose collar is easiest.
Tell us at least 24 hours ahead and we will move it. The policies page explains what happens with shorter notice.
